LF Veterans Upward Bound Reaches Membership Milestone: Now Serving 314 Veterans and Counting

7 March 2024 By Sierra Trinidad

Dallas, GA – Since the grand opening of the Veterans Upward Bound Education Resource Center in May 2023, the L.E.A.R.N. foundation’s Veterans Upward Bound programs have grown to have 15 employees and serving over 300 veterans and counting while supporting other critical needs such as homelessness, food insecurity, and clothing. Through community involvement, partnerships and establishing a digital media platform, they have been able to meet the veterans where they are at and build a trusting relationship and channel of open communication. Veterans Upward Bound assists veterans with making their transition easier after service. They serve those who served by igniting their futures and helping them bridge the gap from service to scholarship.

Some of their staff including the CEO and Founder, Dr. Lemelle, are veterans. They have been in the position of the program members they serve. “Our job is to assist them with making their transition easier for them to be more successful” explains Dr. Lemelle.  With over 100 years combined of experience in higher education, their staff is more than qualified to support veterans through preparing for school, getting into school, getting the degree, and helping get a job. Dr. Lemelle states “The key is to teach ‘our program members’ to self-advocate. We want to make sure they know that we’re right there on their side to assist them while also building their confidence.” They use their experience to provide the support veterans deserve, every step of the way. More specifically, these services include but are not limited to, application assistance, tutoring, workshop, enrichment activities, and exclusive events, connecting program members with school, local and national resources, and a dedicated education resource center with two computer labs, a decompression space, kitchen, and printing services.

Looking toward the future, L.E.A.R.N. has hopes of serving over 1,000 veterans. By building relationships and partnerships with local U.S. National Guard and reservists’ units, and companies that service veterans, L.E.A.R.N. plans to achieve this goal to further empower our heroes and build their success beyond service.
